Are female scientists better cooks?

Just reflecting on all the cooking i have done in the past 12 hours or so.Time check is 2am Nigerian time and i lie completely exhausted on my bed.

I go through this every time i am about to attend a conference, workshop or training that takes me away from my family of seven and a husband who is very particular about his food.As a career scientist attending such meetings is imperative but takes a backseat to my family as such to balance things out i always do marathon cooking and at the end my freezer is stocked with an assortment of meals enough to feed an army for weeks.

This time around i really did it and even my fussy husband had to admit it.i cooked chicken stew,egusi soup,banga soup,vegetable soup,curry sauce,fried rice,stewed snails,stewed gizzard,isi-ewu,nkwobi and fresh fish pepper soup all a minimum of three bowls each.Anyone who understands Nigerian cuisine will appreciate that this is quite a feat.

So i wonder if other female scientists with families go through this ritual if yes, we certainly make better cooks.

How to Embed Video into your blog

The first thing to do is to upload your video to YouTube. You DON'T need to register on YouTube because it is a Google service and as such, you can log in using your Gmail account.

After uploading the video, ensure that you choose "Public" and not "Unlisted" under Privacy. Save your video. Look out for "Embed" under "Sharing Options" copy the code and paste into the HTML tab in your blog post.

Enjoy this video I shot at the Ibadan Workshop featuring the oldest participant in any of our workshops so far. This grandmother from the United States is so passionate about Africa and Nigeria that she abandoned her country and has adopted Nigeria as her country and fully integrated into Yoruba culture. She has set December this year as the date she would stop speaking the "slave" language of English. She would be speaking Yoruba only. She is working hard on her Yoruba.

My observation from this training has shown me that access to knowledge  is  a matter of right not a privilege. Therefore as soon as I get back to my institution, I will make sure that the knowledge  I gained from the Training is shared among my colleagues who were not privileged to attend the workshop. Also, knowledge gained will enable me to serve the library users  (students, staff and other members of the RSUST university community)better.

We were exposed to numerous tool during the training. For instance, with the use of wikis, I will drive the library users to this platform where they can get first hand knowledge on definitions and concepts. Flickre
with library users, I can share photographs of the library and any other important historical photos which users may find useful. Other tools like google reader, google alert, google , etc. be brought to my library users attention.

Research Topics for Groups

ORANGE - Your group has been invited to study the deleterious effects of crude oil
pollution in Rivers State. Make your findings known to the State Government and other
stakeholders including farmers who have lost their source of livelihood.

BLUE - It was said that some Asian countries came to Nigeria in the 1960s and took away
palm fruits to see if they would germinate in their countries. Now, those countries are not
only self-sufficient in palm oil and its derivatives, they are exporting finished products to
Nigeria. Research on the reasons for the failure of Nigeria's agricultural sector and what
can be done to remedy the situation.

WHITE - Nigeria's vast resources in fisheries is largely untapped. Crude and archaic
fishing methods are used by subsistence farmers in our largely rural areas. As a group of
researchers sent by government to offer help, identify the problems and proffer realisable
solutions to both farmers and government.

GREEN - As a research scientist, you have been drafted into a group with the mandate to
consider alternative means of generating electricity without harming the environment -
the so-called "green power." Submit a report recommending methods to adopt to achieve
the stated objective.

YELLOW: Government is not certain on how to tackle the issue of technology transfer in
our quest for development. Several approaches in the past have failed to achieve the
desired objective. As a research group with one of the best minds in Mechanical
Engineering, identify the problem areas in Nigeria's quest and how to overcome them.

RED: The Nigerian economy is mono-cultural. This it has been said is not good for the long
time security of the country. Diversification is an option that government has not been able to
actualise. In the light of Vision 2020-20, you are required to present a position paper to government
on the way forward.

INSTRUCTION: In not more than seven full paragraphs, organise your research and subsequent report in a manner that every member of the group contributes to the work. Clearly show that there was:
  1. Collaboration
  2. Sharing

CTA (the Technical Centre for Agricultural and Rural Cooperation) was established within the framework of a co-operation agreement between the African, Caribbean and Pacific States (known collectively as the ACP states) and the European Union. This agreement referred to as the Lomé Convention, was put in place in order to improve the management of agricultural information in ACP countries. In June 2000, the ACP and EU States agreed on a new framework known as the Cotonou Agreement as the new basis for continued ACP-EU co-operation. CTA shares the stage with many other institutions in being called upon to support the ACP States. In response, it has defined its niche – those areas in which it has some comparative advantage and in which it can make a special contribution. The Centre acts as a broker between organisations and professionals in ACP and EU States. It seeks to establish fora for promoting dialogue and the exchange of information between organisations and professionals in ACP States in order to enhance their technical capacity and skills in information and communication management for agricultural development.

CTA’s two operational objectives are based on this new framework. The first is to improve the availability of, and access to, relevant, adequate, accurate, timely and well-adapted information on priority information topics for ACP agricultural and rural development. The second objective is to improve the communication management capacity of ACP agricultural and rural development organizations. Training programmes in information and communication management and strategy development are key instruments of these operational objectives.

During visits to a number of institutions, the missions got the strong message that exposure to Web 2.0 applications would be highly welcome. This request was made more explicit by the group of ambassadors of Central Africa to the European Union, who approached CTA on the matter. To this effect CTA has conceived this intervention covering - for the time being - five countries in sub-Saharan Africa.

The Training Programme has organised a series of Web 2.0 training courses in various regions of Africa. The first was in collaboration with the Commonwealth of Learning and RUFORUM in 2008. That course exposed the great need for this type of course especially in research and academic institutions. A follow-up course was run in 2009 with the Regional Universities Forum (RUFORUM) and two subsequent courses focusing for Web 2.0 Tools for Research Support and Networking in Africa were organised for West and central Africa in French and English in Ghana and Senegal in 2009. In 2010 CTA has run courses in Benin, Ghana and Kenya. In Nigeria, two courses have already been conducted at the University of Agriculture, Abeokuta (UNAAB) and the University of Ibadan.
Objectives
The general objective of the Web 2.0 Opportunities is to improve the skills of researchers and development actors in the use of a variety of Web 2.0 applications for information retrieval, collaborative generation of content, information sharing and effective and cost-efficient communication. The aim is to improve networking and the management of agricultural information and among development actors.
Learning Outcomes
At the end of the course, participants will be able to:
Identify and explore currently available Web 2.0 tools;
Create alerts to obtain desired information streams;
Subscribe to social networking sites;
Publish their own content online using blogging applications;
Develop content on assigned topics using Web2.0 tools using wikis and Google docs
Utilise VOIP tools on the Internet to communicate with colleagues
Utilise online mapping tools effectively
Develop action plan for the use of collaborative tools in institutions in the region.
Our ultimate objective is that the course will create concrete and measurable changes that will be reflected in improved performance in the work places of each of the participants.
CTA wishes to thank the Rivers State University of Science and Technology, Port Harcourt, and its Vice Chancellor, Professor B. B. Fakae and the principal officers of the University notably the Registrar, Mrs. D.C. Odimabo, University Librarian, Dr Blessing Ahiauzu, for offering the facilities of this great institution for the organisation of this course.
CTA’s gratitude also goes especially to the resource persons, Messrs. Johnson Opigo and Richard Lamptey for being there to share their experiences and to guide the participants towards the achievement of the course objectives.
We warmly welcome all the participants. As adult learners coming from various technical backgrounds and with a very clear view of how you will utilize the skills gained on this course, we believe that you will be apply the skills effectively to enhance your work in the area of information management. Your effective participation is crucial to the overall success of the course.
We wish you all a very fruitful course.
Thank you for your attention.

Welcome to the Port Harcourt Web 2.0 Group Blog. I encourage you to take full advantage of this training on Web 2.0 Tools. The world is changing fast and so is the way we interact, collaborate and share information. The web holds enormous possibilities for research, collaboration and sharing. This training is therefore specifically designed to equip you sufficiently to change the way you use the web. My fervent hope is that you will utilise the skills acquired to change the way you collaborate and share information.

On behalf of my colleague, Mr. Richard Lamptey we wish all of you a successful workshop.
